FCIAC Football State Playoff Preview
Class L
No. 8 Cheshire (6-4) vs. No. 1 St. Joseph (9-1) (Kennedy Stadium)
Put Cheshire down on the list of teams that are the beneficiaries of the expansion to six divisions and 48 schools. The Rams have played a number of state playoff teams tough but they are a decided underdog here. The Cadets have been one of the best stories of the season, losing 23 players over the summer, including several starters, due to an offseason incident. They played with 47 players and opened eyes with an opening 14-0 win over Darien. Everyone waited for the team to falter, against Staples, Masuk, New Canaan, but only Greenwich, in a close game, has been able to defeat them. The Cadets do nothing flashy but are solid in all areas. Most impressive may be the pass rush of Jack Kilmartin and Ryan DeMarco, who have combined for 14 sacks, the running of Riley Jordan and the receiving of Brandon Hutchison and the emerging Mickey Covino. Quarterback Will Singewald is a game manager, and he has done it well. Even with all the state titles, this may be coach Joe Della Vecchia’s best job.
